Ins and Outs of ID

Updated: Sep 15, 2021

This week with ID provided GREAT info and I could see the progress and evolvement, which created stepping stones from one theory and method to the next.

I started by listening to the podcast on Gagne's Theory of Instruction and then had to look up the conditions of learning and the nine events of instruction. As discussed in the podcast, the constructivism perspective is completely missing, which I can see being an issue for online learning, especially now. Prior to the pandemic, I feel online classes were all set up the same and held the same expectations. But now, I feel like students expect more--quality education from the online environment.

As Rachel Koblic discussed her role and her company's methodologies, she touched on Gagne, but made it a point to note their evolvement and focus on tailoring approaches. Rachel also discussed their use of the ADDIE model, stating it was their primary ID model, and it was their main goal to always ask a lot of questions. And I believe Melissa mentioned her connection with the backward design a week or two ago, so I thought it was a great tie in when Rachel discussed the backward design approach, as well. All about looking at those objectives. I recently heard an interview with Michael Molenda where he puts a large emphasis on the importance of objectives with organized education, and no matter the name--goals, outcomes, objectives--it is that acknowledgement of what and why we are doing something, that purpose of our activity that we need to understand.

As I listen to podcasts, join in on interviews, and read through articles, I'm getting excited about the connections to names, theories, and models from one to the next. Although I still feel like a 'fish out of water' with much of the big world of Ed Tech, I'm slowly piecing things together, week by week!

Hi Rebecca,

I think you are right that students are expecting more and more as everyone becomes more familiar with online learning. One thing about instructional design is we think about the resources available to us, and when students and teachers have developed more knowledge and skills to teach and learn online, they might feel they have more resources and would expect more too. Just a personal perspective on understanding your point.

Great to hear that you are feeling that gradual movement of where you are in understanding the field.

Hi Rebecca,

Definitely! I meant to say everyone's online learning and teaching experience ultimately becomes their resources and part of their future expectations.

Ways of learning are changing so fast. I'm looking forward to seeing where we are headed.

Rebecca,

You are not alone in still having the feeling of being a “fish out of water.” I think Racheal was the perfect guest speaker for this week. Each week as I go through the readings, I sometimes struggle to find the connection to the “real world.” The examples Rachel provided demonstrated the link between the readings and the “real world.” It was great to see how ADDIE is being used and adapted to meet customer needs and how 2U uses Gagne's Theory. As you mentioned, I think students expect more quality and creativity in the online learning environment. If they are not already doing so, I can see universities providing virtual tours of their online learning programs and curriculum.…

Mark,

What a great idea about schools providing visual tours of their online learning programs! I think this should definitely push past the online 'meet and greet' to showcase why that online program is special, different, unique, etc.
