Career Flip

I decided to flip flop and post about week 12b first since Dr. James Klein was our first guest speaker.

I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Klein's interview and discussion covering topics of the history of Ed Tech, how his views have evolved, and where the future of ID is headed. Dr. Klein's background reminded me a lot of my own, elementary school teacher wanting to teach future teachers the right way to teach. Almost fate that he was able to chat with Bob Reiser when he was looking for his next step. I found his response to my question about his current thoughts on the long-ago definition from Dr. Reiser regarding the field of ID to be a merger of education, psychology, and communications to be really enlightening and great example of how he has grown as a researcher and educator. I think the explanation of ID being impacted by systems theory, communication theory, learning theory, and curriculum and instruction theory is exactly what we have been reading about throughout this course. Then to further elaborate on the four areas in which ID has contributed being media design, performance improvement, conditions-based theory, and constructivist-based theory/philosophy describes this ever-changing and growing field's purpose and impact.

It was interesting to learn how Dr. Klein came about co-writing the chapter, Getting Involved in Instructional Design and Technology (2018). The tips Klein and Rushby (2018) suggested are the detailed versions of what Dr. Klein spoke about in the interview. I think it's really wise for every student and professional to get involved, learn what you can, and most importantly-make those connections! Plus, now's the time while we're students and it's cheaper ;) I appreciated Dr. Bonk's advice about taking a picture with a scholar or expert and then later emailing it to them, thanking them, opening the door for communication...and maybe collaboration!

While reading Kumar & Ritzhaupt's (2017) article on ID professional in higher and what it is they do exactly, I was struck by what type and how many universities actually have instructional designers on faculty? And are they more common in specific programs? I'm wondering if Teaching & Learning/Curriculum & Instruction departments would be less likely to hire instructional designers since their staff are supposed to know how to design instruction, hmm. While I did appreciate reading about ID professional's roles, who they service, what their [non]typical day looks like, and so forth, I truly appreciate Dr. Klein's answer to my question about one of the most unexpected positions held by a student with an ID background- Consultant for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for NY Health Dept.

Hi Rebecca,

As I read Klein & Rushby this week, I was really struck by the huge number of organizations, journals, and conferences that they highlighted, but they did it so well and I appreciated the resources! I didn't read Kumar and Ritzhaupt, but since starting the course, I have been really interested in reading job postings for IDs. The lists of duties, expectations, requirements, etc. are so vast and so varied from job to job! I feel like I could enter one ID role and feel really successful and go to another role and be a total flop. I think it serves to, yet again, reinforce the breadth of the field. Looking forward to watching the video and heari…

Haha! I completely relate to this comment--"I feel like I could enter one ID role and feel really successful and go to another role and be a total flop." It goes with what Renee discussed a bit that it's all about the context, which to me is so unique and not a common descriptor of many positions.

Hi Rebecca,

I attended Dr. Klein's session and liked that question you asked Dr. Klein. It was a question I had too seeing that IST people have come from diverse backgrounds. I wonder as the field grows and more programs established around the world, how that might change the professional training or demographics of the field. Anyways, thanks for asking for his advice!

Your comment about who is more likely to hire IDs and what are IDs expected to do reminds me of the wide range of duties and skills I feel IDs might be expected to have. This is just my personal experience, but IDs could be expected to provide very different services, depending on the work context. The…

Hi Renee,

Glad my questions benefited others :)

You bring up a great point about the role of ID being so different depending on the work context. I wonder how many jobs really follow this structure of 'depends on organization, position, goals, and so forth'? I'm thinking not many--most roles stay pretty constant regardless of these elements. Interesting ID doesn't follow this structure.

Thanks!

Hi Rebecca,

I have watched part of Dr. Klein's talk and may tackle watching more once classes are over. I too, like the idea of taking a photo and sending it - that really opens the door. Also, posting on social media and tagging would be a good way too (or in addition). I want to delve deeper into choosing an organization and looking at what they all have to offer this summer, since it will be one year of EdD in IST under my belt, and almost 2 years working in the field. I can't wait to get to the part in Dr. Klein's talk where he responds to your question about the ID professional in the DEI posi…

Rebecca,

Thanks for asking - I'm feeling good (tired, but good) with the first semester almost wrapped up! As for how it impacts my position, I feel that I have more to give based in theories that resonate well with the President, Deans, Program Directors, and Faculty that I work with in my everyday work and on a task force aimed at vamping up our Lifelong Learning offerings/curriculum. It's nice to put research and theories to things that I had already been doing successfully - now I have the "proof".😃

Hey Rebecca,

I am glad that you enjoyed Dr. Klein’s talk. I will have to go back and watch it; I have been swapped with projects these last two weeks. Thanks for sharing Dr. Bonk’s advice about taking a picture with a scholar and emailing them later. What a unique idea and way to establish a connection. I would have never thought of that. I totally agree that now is the time to establish connections and join communities. I have it on my winter break to-do list. I feel under pressure to figure things out quickly as my program is only a year, and then I am thrust back into the secluded world of the military. There seems to be…

Hey Mark,

Thanks! And yes, I thought Dr. Bonk's idea was so creative and clever!

Your program is a year? Oh, yes--definitely sign up for some organizations and journals, maybe even attend a conference (or at least think about it!) Check out Klein and Rushby's (2018) reading this week, it will help point you in the right direction!
